INSTRUCTIONS

GENERAL INFORMATION:

TRANSITION AREA
NO RUNNING AND NO RIDING WITHIN THE TRANSITION AREA. Bikes must be walked out to start and in to end the bike leg (bikers will be told to DISMOUNT at the “Finish” Line). Runners must also walk out.

FINISH LINE
The bike and run both end just before the Transition Area on a bumpy, unpaved, dirt and gravel strip. BIKERS SLOW DOWN…IT IS A SHARP TURN FROM THE PAVEMENT TO THE GRAVEL. Even runners may slip if they try to plant their outside foot for a football type change of direction. Let’s all relax and have fun.

SWIMMERS:
SWIMMERS ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR BRIGHTLY COLORED SWIM CAPS FOR YOUR SAFETY. The Rotary Club of Dunsmuir will have them on sale before the swim in the event you need one.
Fast swimmers and hardcore triathletes start in the middle of the long thin beach. Slower and “here-for-fun try-athletes” start to the right and left. This allows everyone to “v” in towards the patio boat without killing each other.

As always there will be boats to herd the swimmers in the right direction. You can also ask for help if you need a rest or if you have to get out of the water for any reason. You are allowed to join the swim again if you want. Once at the patio boat there is a rope with mild jug floats and you can hang onto that anytime the rest of the way.
Wet suits are optional, but you have to take it off yourself. You can have someone waiting with a pair of shower thongs at the Marina boat ramp if you want. The path to the Transition Area will be swept but it is a chip-seal surface. We suggest “Water Sox”—little rubber booties—if you can find some.

If you are not confident about the swim, we are allowing swim fins, but only for safety…NOT FOR SPEED. Fins are an unfair advantage and anyone coming out of the water EARLY wearing fins, will be penalized!

BICYCLE:
Should a situation be encountered where a sign or roadway marking requires compliance (e.g., stop sign, etc.) and no CHP Officer is present to control traffic, you must comply with the signal, sign, or marking.
As a reminder, competing in this competition does not relieve you of the duties and responsibilities specified in the California Vehicle Code This includes speed limits, right-of-way violations, sign violations, etc.) unless you are following the directions of a CHP officer at a traffic control point.

REMEMBER:

RUN:
As a reminder, Section 21954 (a) of the California Vehicle Code (CVC) states, “Every pedestrian upon a roadway at any point other than within a marked crosswalk or within an unmarked crosswalk at any intersection shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles upon the roadway so near as to constitute an immediate hazard.” Do not violate the right-of-way of any motor vehicle or other roadway traffic unless lawfully authorized to do so (e.g., entering traffic lane in vehicle’s path prohibited, crossing road in vehicle’s path prohibited unless at a corner, crosswalk, or reasonably safe.)

It is suggested that bright colors be worn to enhance your presence to motorists traveling in the area.
Runners should not run “abreast” and should maintain a single-file configuration when running.

As a reminder, Section 21956 CVC states, “No pedestrian shall walk upon any roadway outside of a business or residence district otherwise than close to his left-hand edge of the roadway.

If in doubt, stop for vehicular traffic to prevent injury or mishap.
